Essilor Transitions Lenses: How Much Do They Cost?

Photochromic lenses stopped being a compromise a few generations ago. The question now isn't whether they're worth it, but which version, on which lens design, and what the full pair actually costs — since the color-changing part is always just one line on the price sheet.

What is a photochromic lens?

A photochromic lens contains light-sensitive molecules built into the lens material itself. Indoors, or wherever UV is weak, the lens stays clear like an ordinary prescription lens. Step outside, and UV triggers a reversible chemical reaction that darkens the lens to cut glare.

In practice, that means not switching back and forth between prescription glasses and sunglasses every time you go outside. It suits anyone in and out of buildings all day, and anyone who's lost a pair of prescription sunglasses this year.

Why photochromic lenses are increasingly popular

The clearest reason is two-in-one convenience: one frame on your face instead of two pairs to carry, mix up, or leave behind. At the same prescription, this route is usually cheaper than buying a clear lens and prescription sunglasses separately.

The second reason is protection you don't have to remember. A quality photochromic lens blocks 100% of UVA and UVB whether clear or darkened, so your eyes stay covered even on overcast days — exactly the days people tend to leave sunglasses at home.

Essilor Transitions Gen S: a real jump in technology

Transitions Optical has been wholly owned by Essilor since 2014, and Gen S is the current generation, launched in 2024. This isn't an update for its own sake: the light-sensitive molecular matrix was redesigned to react to changing light almost instantly.

Gen S can be applied to most Essilor lens designs — Varilux progressives, Eyezen single-vision, standard single-vision — and that's the part worth paying attention to when choosing. Color-changing is a technology added onto whichever lens design you actually need, not a separate lens category of its own.

How fast Transitions Gen S changes color

Every photochromic lens darkens quickly. The old weak point was the reverse direction: stepping indoors while the lens was still visibly dark for several minutes. Gen S clears back to transparent roughly twice as fast as the previous generation, and that's the part you'll actually notice day to day.

Two things still matter and always will: temperature and how much UV reaches the lens. A photochromic lens darkens less inside a hot car and less behind tinted driving glass, which is why a dedicated driving version of these lenses exists.

Color options and how dark they go

Gen S comes in three classic colors — gray, brown and graphite green — plus style shades including sapphire, amethyst, amber and emerald. Gray keeps colors neutral, brown boosts contrast, and green sits between the two.

At maximum darkness, the lens is about as dark as a pair of fashion sunglasses, and the color comes in more evenly than on earlier generations. We'll test the color options against your frame and skin tone before you decide — a color that looks great in the catalog doesn't always suit every face.

UV and blue-light protection

Blocking UVA and UVB completely in both states is the baseline, and Gen S also filters part of the high-energy blue-violet band while still letting the longer, circadian-relevant blue-turquoise wavelengths through. Essilor rates it at the top of their E-SPF scale.

Worth being straightforward about the blue-light part too: current clinical evidence that blue-light filtering reduces eye strain is still weak. Choose Gen S for the UV protection and the convenience, and treat the blue-light filtering as a bonus, not the main reason to buy.

Fitting and consultation process at Manh Long Optical

A photochromic layer on top of a lens design still has to be cut correctly. We do a full refraction, take the pupillary center and fitting height on the actual frame you've chosen, then grind the lens to those numbers — with a progressive, being off by a few millimeters costs you field of view.

Use and care to keep the lens looking good

Rinse with clean water before wiping, then dry with a microfiber cloth. Wiping dry straightaway grinds dust into the coating, and a scratch on a photochromic lens looks worse than on a clear lens because you're seeing it against a tinted background.

Heat is the real enemy. A motorbike seat box or a car dashboard in the middle of a Hanoi summer gets hot enough to permanently degrade the color-changing ability. Store it in a hard case away from sun when you're not wearing it.

Common questions

Are Transitions lenses worth the extra cost over a standard clear lens?

If you're regularly outdoors and don't want to carry a second pair of prescription sunglasses, yes — one pair replaces two. If you're mostly indoors, this upgrade matters less.

Do Transitions lenses fit any frame?

Most frame styles work; only very thin rimless or heavily curved frames need an extra check on lens edge thickness.

How long do Transitions lenses last?

Usually 2-3 years of daily wear before the color-changing ability or coating starts to fade, similar to Essilor's other premium lens lines.

Around two to three years of daily wear before the reaction visibly slows down, and heat speeds up that decline. Most people replace the lens when their prescription changes anyway.
