Essilor Eyezen: Lenses for Heavy Screen Use

What is Essilor Eyezen?

Ordinary prescription lenses are built for distance vision. Eyezen is built for how most of us actually use our eyes all day, a few tens of centimetres from a screen, and that's what you're paying for.

Essilor Eyezen is a newer generation of digital single-vision lens, designed specifically for how people actually look at things in the smartphone era. Unlike an ordinary prescription lens, which is optimised purely for distance, Eyezen is built to ease the eye's effort during long stretches of close, focused screen work.

The line targets ages 18 to 45, the group with the heaviest device use. Combining accurate refractive correction with active eye-strain relief is why Eyezen is its own line, separate from a standard single-vision lens.

Eyezen Start vs Eyezen Boost

Essilor's catalogue splits Eyezen by how much extra near-vision power is added, each tied to an age band:

Start adds no extra power at all, its eye-relief comes from the surface design, DualOptim. Boost adds real power, and the older the age band, the higher the add, because the eye's natural accommodation range narrows with age.

The bands overlap, so age is only a starting point. A 35-year-old on a screen 10 hours a day and a 35-year-old on a screen two hours a day don't need the same level. The eye test decides, not your birth year.

Eyezen Focus: less strain on near focus

When we use a phone or computer, the distance from eye to screen is usually much shorter than with a printed page. Reading small text on a glowing screen also forces the eye's focusing muscle to stay contracted continuously, this is where digital eye strain comes from.

To address this, Essilor built in Eyezen Focus technology. By smoothly adding a light amount of extra power in the lower part of the lens, where the eye naturally looks when using a phone or computer, the lens reduces the accommodation load on the eye's lens. That lets the eye muscle relax more naturally, so it feels less strained after long stretches on a screen.

DualOptim: sharpness out to the edge

A drawback of ordinary lenses is that the image is only sharp at the centre, while the edges suffer from optical distortion that blurs or warps the image. As your eyes move constantly between screen, keyboard and surroundings, that uneven shift in focus is a common source of fatigue.

Eyezen's DualOptim technology addresses this by recalculating the lens surface along both the horizontal and vertical axes. Every point on the lens is recalculated for the exact direction the eye looks through it. The result is a wider zone of clear vision, with sharpness held from the centre out to the edge.

Blue UV Capture: selective filtering, not blanket filtering

Digital screens and office LED lighting emit a meaningful amount of the blue-violet light band. This is the range eye research is currently paying attention to, most clearly for its effect on sleep rhythm when screens are used in the evening.

Eyezen lenses carry Essilor's improved Blue UV Capture technology, with light-filtering molecules built directly into the lens material. Notably, it filters selectively: it blocks the blue-violet portion while still letting blue-turquoise light through, to help maintain alertness and accurate colour perception. Unlike older-generation blue-light lenses that often carried a strong yellow tint, Essilor Eyezen shows almost no colour shift, so from the outside it looks close to a clear lens.

Crizal coatings: scratch, smudge and glare resistance

Alongside its core optical technologies, Essilor Eyezen ships with a Crizal coating such as Crizal Rock or Crizal Sapphire HR. These coatings make the lens more durable and keep it clearer for longer.

The anti-reflective layer cuts glare and haze from office lighting or oncoming headlights at night. A newer-generation scratch-resistant layer makes the lens surface more resilient to everyday knocks. Water-, dust- and fingerprint-resistance keep the lens clear and easy to wipe.

Who suits Eyezen, who doesn't need it yet

Good fit: someone on a computer nearly all day who then picks up a phone in the evening, and feels eye strain by late afternoon. Someone who's started finding small screen text harder to read but isn't yet at progressive-lens age. Someone already wearing an ordinary blue-light lens who's still straining.

Not needed yet: if you use a screen a few hours a day and don't feel strain, an ordinary single-vision lens with a blue-light option is cheaper and enough. If you're over 45 and have to hold your phone further away to read it, what you need is a progressive lens or an office lens, Eyezen won't substitute for that. And if the eye strain comes with ongoing headaches, double vision or sudden blurring, see an eye hospital first; buying glasses isn't the next step yet.

We say this plainly, because fitting an Eyezen to someone who actually needs a progressive lens wastes both sides' time, and you'll be back regardless.

The photochromic Transitions Gen S version sits separately: 1.50 is 6,740,000d, 1.60 is 9,520,000d. Above that is a group with Crizal Rock coating made at an overseas lab, adding a 1.74 index, Transitions Xtractive versions and a Fit version with individually measured fitting parameters, ranging from 4,180,000d to 21,960,000d. Ask at the counter directly for this group, since each configuration is priced separately.

Worth knowing: if your prescription is under -5.00 with astigmatism under -2.00, the Start Stock 1.56 at 1,780,000d is 680,000d cheaper than the same-index Max AZ stock lens, and covers astigmatism too, since the Max AZ stock lens is only ground for eyes without astigmatism. The Start Stock price sits on a separate catalogue page, so it's easy to miss. Just ask staff directly whether the Crizal Sapphire HR version is available.

On the marketing figure: Essilor states 88% wearer satisfaction with Eyezen Start Stock. That's the manufacturer's own internal study, February 2023, sample size 15. We note it exists, it isn't a reason to choose it.

Don't wipe lenses on your shirt or with rough tissue, coarse fibres can create fine scratches that reduce the anti-glare effect over time.

When not wearing them, always keep the glasses in their case to avoid accidental knocks. Also avoid leaving them somewhere hot, like a car dashboard or a motorbike seat box in direct sun, since high heat can cause the material to expand and the nano coating on the lens surface to lift.

No, it's a single-vision lens with a light amount of extra near-vision support built in, not a full progressive design.

No, Eyezen also comes in a plano (zero power) version for people with no refractive error who still want reduced eye strain and blue-light filtering.
