Two wavebands, two different problems

Salespeople often bundle "blue light" and "UV protection" into one pitch, as if they were the same feature sold under two names. They aren't. Ultraviolet sits just outside the visible spectrum, below 400 nanometers, invisible to the eye and strongest outdoors under direct sun. Blue light sits inside the visible spectrum, roughly 400 to 500 nanometers, and you're looking at a source of it right now if you're reading this on a screen.

The sun puts out far more blue light than any monitor or phone ever will. What changes indoors isn't the intensity, it's the distance and the duration: a screen sits inches from your face for hours at a stretch, which is a different exposure pattern than daylight passing through a window.

What each layer actually does

UV protection blocks ultraviolet before it reaches the eye. This matters because cumulative UV exposure over years is a recognized contributor to cataracts and pterygium, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A lens can carry full UV protection built into the material itself, which won't fade or wear off the way a surface coating might.

Blue-light filtering works one of two ways: a reflective coating added to a clear lens, which sends a portion of blue light back out rather than through, or an absorptive lens material with a light yellow tint that blocks part of the blue band before it reaches your eye. Absorptive lenses filter more, but the tint is visible; coated lenses stay closer to clear with a faint blue-violet sheen when light hits them at an angle.

How to tell them apart in the shop

Neither feature is something you can identify by looking at a lens straight on, so ask directly rather than guessing. A UV-blocking lens carries a UV400 or E-SPF rating on the product documentation; this has nothing to do with tint or coating color, and an untinted clear lens can carry full UV protection. A blue-light coating shows up as a subtle reflection, usually a thin violet or blue tinge visible when you tilt the lens under a light rather than looking through it head-on. If a shop can't tell you which of the two, or both, a given lens provides, ask them to check the spec sheet before you decide.

Which one your routine actually needs

Common questions

Is anti-reflective coating the same thing as blue-light filtering?
No. Anti-reflective coating cuts glare and reflections across the visible spectrum to make your lenses look clearer and reduce halos at night. Blue-light filtering specifically targets the 400-500nm band. A lens can have one, both, or neither.
Does UV protection wear off over time?
When it's built into the lens material itself rather than applied as a surface layer, no, it doesn't fade or wear down with normal cleaning and use.
Is there solid evidence blue light from screens damages eyes long-term?
