What is an Essilor digital-surfacing single-vision lens?
Digital surfacing is a computer-controlled lens grinding process that machines each point on the lens surface to your exact eye measurements, pupillary distance, frame tilt and fitting height — rather than grinding to a fixed mold as traditional lens-making does. It isn't a separate lens type; it's a manufacturing method applied to Essilor's single-vision range.
The result is a clearer field of view with less distortion and warping at the lens edge compared with a traditionally surfaced lens at the same index — most noticeable for higher prescriptions or strongly curved frames.

Crizal Rock coating: scratch-, smudge- and UV-resistant
Crizal Rock is Essilor's newer-generation coating, combining scratch resistance with smudge resistance (fingerprints, dust, oil) in a single coating, plus reduced glare and UV protection. In the pricing table below, Crizal Rock costs more than a standard Clear coat at the same index.
- High scratch resistance: fewer scratches from light knocks or everyday wiping.
- Smudge resistance: fewer fingerprints, dust and oil marks — wipes clean faster than a standard coat.
- Glare reduction, UV protection: more comfortable on screens or outdoors in bright sun.

Lens thinness by refractive index
The refractive index determines how thin a lens is at a given prescription — the higher the index, the thinner and lighter the lens. The chart below from Essilor compares thinness across four common indexes (1.56, 1.59 Airwear™, 1.60 and 1.67) at -4.00, -6.00 and -8.00 astigmatism:
Customers with higher myopia/astigmatism are usually advised toward 1.60 or 1.67 for a thinner, lighter, more cosmetically flattering lens; lower prescriptions are already thin enough at 1.56–1.59, so paying more for a higher index isn't necessary.
Who should consider it, and who doesn't need it
Worth considering if you:
- Have myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism and want less distortion and blur at the lens edge.
- Spend a lot of time on computers or phones — Crizal Rock helps with glare and smudging from frequent wiping.
- Are active outdoors, drive often, or work in dusty/humid environments.
- Wear curved frames (wrap, sport) — go for 1.59 WRAP/1.5 WRAP rather than standard lenses.
May not need it if you:
- Have a mild prescription and aren't sensitive to lens thickness — index 1.56 with a Clear coat is usually enough.
- Are budget-conscious — standard SV with a Clear coat is more affordable than SV360 with Crizal Rock and still covers basic needs.

How to care for your lenses
Crizal Rock-coated lenses are more durable than standard lenses but still need a daily cleaning habit with dedicated lens cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth — avoid a shirt or rough tissue, which can create fine scratches that reduce the anti-glare effect. Keep the glasses in their case when not worn, and avoid hot spots like a car dashboard or motorbike seat box in direct sun, since high heat can cause the nano coating to lift.
