Essilor Crizal Rock: digital surfacing single-vision lenses that are thinner by index, scratch- and smudge-resistant

Written by Alvin · Manh Long Optical, 147A Le Duan, Cua Nam, Hanoi · Updated 13 September 2026

In short: The higher the refractive index (1.56 → 1.67), the thinner an Essilor digital-surfaced single-vision lens gets — most noticeable for higher myopia/astigmatism. Crizal Rock coating adds scratch and smudge resistance beyond a standard Clear coat at the same index. Reference pricing from Essilor starts at 3,380,000d. Manh Long Optical, 147A Le Duan, Cua Nam, offers a free eye exam and helps you pick the right index for your prescription.

Digital surfacing and Crizal Rock coating are two things customers often ask about when cutting new lenses for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. This article explains what both mean, compares SV with SV360, which index is thinnest, and gives reference pricing from Essilor.

What is an Essilor digital-surfacing single-vision lens?

Digital surfacing is a computer-controlled lens grinding process that machines each point on the lens surface to your exact eye measurements, pupillary distance, frame tilt and fitting height — rather than grinding to a fixed mold as traditional lens-making does. It isn't a separate lens type; it's a manufacturing method applied to Essilor's single-vision range.

The result is a clearer field of view with less distortion and warping at the lens edge compared with a traditionally surfaced lens at the same index — most noticeable for higher prescriptions or strongly curved frames.

Crizal Rock coating: scratch-, smudge- and UV-resistant

Crizal Rock is Essilor's newer-generation coating, combining scratch resistance with smudge resistance (fingerprints, dust, oil) in a single coating, plus reduced glare and UV protection. In the pricing table below, Crizal Rock costs more than a standard Clear coat at the same index.

Besides Crizal Rock, Essilor's price list also includes BlueUV Capture (blue/violet light filtering) and Clear (base coating) at the same indexes — priced lower, see the pricing table below.

Lens thinness by refractive index

The refractive index determines how thin a lens is at a given prescription — the higher the index, the thinner and lighter the lens. The chart below from Essilor compares thinness across four common indexes (1.56, 1.59 Airwear™, 1.60 and 1.67) at -4.00, -6.00 and -8.00 astigmatism:

Customers with higher myopia/astigmatism are usually advised toward 1.60 or 1.67 for a thinner, lighter, more cosmetically flattering lens; lower prescriptions are already thin enough at 1.56–1.59, so paying more for a higher index isn't necessary.

How to care for your lenses

Crizal Rock-coated lenses are more durable than standard lenses but still need a daily cleaning habit with dedicated lens cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth — avoid a shirt or rough tissue, which can create fine scratches that reduce the anti-glare effect. Keep the glasses in their case when not worn, and avoid hot spots like a car dashboard or motorbike seat box in direct sun, since high heat can cause the nano coating to lift. See our full guide at Caring for Your Glasses.

Common questions

What is a digital-surfacing single-vision lens?
It's a single-vision lens ground by computer to your exact eye and frame measurements, reducing distortion and warping at the edge compared with traditional surfacing at the same index.
What index makes a lens thin?
The higher the index, the thinner the lens at the same prescription. Per Essilor's material, 1.60 and 1.67 are noticeably thinner than 1.56 and 1.59 for astigmatism of -6.00 or more; lower prescriptions are already thin enough at 1.56–1.59.
Does Crizal Rock block UV light?
Yes. Crizal Rock reduces glare and offers UV protection in addition to its main function of scratch and smudge resistance.
Is SV360 a lot more expensive than standard SV?
Yes, SV360 is generally priced higher than standard SV at the same index and coating. For example, index 1.60 with a Clear coat: SV 4,780,000d versus SV360 6,880,000d.
Is Crizal Rock suitable for curved (wrap) frames?
Yes — Essilor offers dedicated 1.59 WRAP and 1.5 WRAP lines designed for strongly curved frames such as sport and protective eyewear.
How much do Essilor digital-surfacing lenses with Crizal Rock cost at Manh Long Optical?
Per Essilor's price list for overseas-lab processing, prices range from 3,380,000d to over 19 million dong depending on index and coating. Prices can change over time — call 0777 986 999 or message Zalo for an exact quote based on your prescription.
How long does it take to cut Essilor digital-surfacing lenses at Manh Long Optical?
