Varilux Physio 3.0 Review: Worth the Upgrade?

Any progressive lens works. The narrower question with a premium design is this: does the extra cost buy something you will notice, or just a longer spec sheet? With Physio 3.0, what Essilor promises is smoother transitions between distances, and you only get that if the lens is fitted correctly.

The optical technology behind Physio 3.0

Physio 3.0 is built on Essilor's W.A.V.E. 2.0 calculation, which Essilor says takes the wearer's changing pupil size and light level into account, rather than a single reference eye.

The lens is then surfaced digitally (freeform) to your prescription. In daily wear, what Essilor's design aims for is that looking from far to near feels less abrupt than with an older-generation progressive.

Binocular Booster: both eyes together

Essilor describes its Binocular Booster as analysing the refraction of both eyes as they move together, so the change between far and near stays smooth for both eyes at once.

Premium coatings and vision protection

On our current price list, Physio 3.0 comes with Essilor's MaxAz coating. Crizal Rock and Crizal Sapphire HR are not on the Physio price list; if you want one of them, ask at the counter and we will tell you whether it can be ordered for your lens and what it costs. Any good anti-reflective coating cuts reflections from oncoming headlights, which is what a driver notices most.

UV protection and blue-violet filtering depend on the lens material and coating; we show you the specification of your exact lens before you order. On blue light specifically, it's worth being precise: the UV protection is well established, while the eye-strain benefit of blue-light filtering isn't.

The clearest advantage is the handoff between zones. From a screen an arm's length away, down to a phone, then up to the road ahead, the shift comes with less of the swaying or "swim" sensation that makes people wary of progressives in the first place. Rinse with clean water or a dedicated solution, then wipe with the microfiber cloth that came with the glasses. Never use a shirt hem or a dry tissue, both are abrasive at exactly the scale the coating lives at, and a scratch in the reading zone means replacing the lens.

Store glasses in a hard case, and avoid leaving them in a motorbike trunk or car dashboard under direct sun. Extreme heat damages the nanoscale coating on the lens surface.
