Why the lens menu has so many options

A premium lens is built from several distinct technical layers, and each layer becomes its own line on the menu, so the number of listed lenses grows with the number of ways those layers can be combined.

The most useful way to read a premium lens quote is to split it into these separate groups, instead of reading it as one number labeled "basic" versus another labeled "premium."

The three real cost layers in a premium lens

Lens design decides how many viewing distances the lens actually covers. Single-vision handles one distance, near or far. Progressive (multifocal) lenses combine several viewing zones on one lens surface. That takes a more complex optical design and tighter fitting accuracy, which is why progressives cost more than single-vision lenses — simply because the engineering is harder.

Coating is a surface treatment applied to the lens: anti-reflective coating cuts glare from screens and lights, scratch-resistant coating extends the lens's usable life, and blue-light filtering reduces part of the blue light coming from screens. On eye strain specifically, current evidence (a 2023 Cochrane review, the American Academy of Ophthalmology) hasn't shown a clear effect from blue-light filtering; the glare reduction from anti-reflective coating is what actually makes screen use more comfortable. Each coating is a separate processing step added on top of the base lens price.

Photochromic ability is a lens material that darkens outdoors and clears indoors on its own. It's useful if you move often between indoor and outdoor settings. Genuine lenses vs. gray-market: what you lose paying less

The clearest difference is how long the lens stays usable before you need to replace it.

The hidden cost of a cheaper gray-market lens is replacing it again after 6-9 months, while Essilor lenses run 1-2 years before needing a swap. Added up over time, genuine lenses aren't as much more expensive as the sticker price alone suggests.

Which layer to upgrade, based on how you actually use your eyes

Consider blue-light filtering if you:

• Spend most of your day looking at a computer or phone screen
• Want less glare during long screen sessions

Consider photochromic if you:

• Move often between indoor and outdoor settings during the day
• Don't want to carry two pairs of glasses (prescription glasses plus sunglasses)

You probably don't need progressive lenses yet if you:

• Only need one viewing distance corrected, near or far: single-vision already covers that

What to check before committing to an upgrade

1. Each layer should be its own line item

If a quote bundles everything into one "premium package" number, ask for it broken down by layer (design / coating / photochromic) so you know what you're actually paying for.

2. Check the fit against your actual prescription

Progressive lenses need an accurate pupil center measurement and some adjustment time. Ask how long that adjustment is expected to take before you commit.

3. Ask exactly what the warranty covers

Keeping premium lenses lasting as long as the price suggests

Premium lenses hold up better than standard ones, but they're not indestructible. A few habits help:

1. Clean with a microfiber cloth. Avoid clothing or tissue paper, which can scratch the coating.
2. Rinse with clean water before wiping dry. Dust sitting on the lens is the most common cause of scratches when wiped dry directly.
3. Store in a case when not wearing them. Avoid leaving glasses face-down on a table.
4. Don't leave them in a hot car for long. High heat can affect the coating and the frame's plastic parts.
